Bulgarian National Identity  Dana Webber  UCOR 1400 Eurovision Dr. Green February 9th, 2021           National identity is the idea that one belongs to a nation or state not because of citizenship, but because of shared values. This idea includes cuisine, music, languages, symbols, and history. The history behind a nation plays a factor in the process of identity. When a nation endures a threat, whether it be cultural, militant, economic or political, the nation becomes closer and the identity becomes stronger. (“What Is The Meaning of National Identity?” Anonymous.) National identity is shown through it’s “significant other(s).” Triandafyllidou (1998) defines significant others as “other nations or ethnic groups that are perceived as a threat to the nation, it’s distinctiveness, authenticity and/or independence.”(pg. 594.)  Hey Bulgaria Blog friends!     This is the first post to my new blog, I hope you enjoy it!  This is all about Eurovision, the iconic European song contest that features contestants from all over. But let's just focus on the best, from the South Balkans, Bulgaria. We will be discussing the wins, losses, songs, and the tumultuous relationship of the contest vs. competitor.  Bulgaria has had an off and on relationship with Eurovision. They appeared for the first time in the competition back in 2005; they began and ended as underdogs in the beginning years, placing 19th and 17th in the first two years. They moved up more and more, even participating in the grand final 4 times! Unfortunately  after their 2018 performance of "Bones" they had to withdraw from the competition in 2019 based on financial difficulties.
